Royce Kitts, estudiante de bibliotecología en (Manhattan, EEUU) nos cuenta con juvenil frescura sus experiencias respecto de las tecnologías aplicadas a la profesión. Mantiene el blog bibliotecario: http://roycekitts.blogspot.com/.
P: Royce, cuáles son tus sentimientos y sensaciones respecto del estudio de la bibliotecología?
R: Soy bastante entusiasta al respecto. Durante el primer semestre mi preocupación radicaba en el porqué de tanta formación teórica, pero ahora estoy comenzando a entender su importancia. Mi actual dilema consiste en la cantidad de cursos que no habré podido hacer para el momento en que gradúe.
P: Trabajas en una biblioteca?
R: Sí. Comencé inicialmente a trabajar en la biblioteca porque buscaban un Book van coordinator y yo justo vivía a dos cuadras de allí.. Después de un año y medio de iniciarme en el mundo bibliotecario, un supervisor me propuso graduarme como bibliotecario.
Hace apenas dos meses que trabajo como referencista; me parece un rol muy variado y entretenido, contestar preguntas, trabajar en programas...
P: Cuál es tu tarea bibliotecaria preferida?
R: Es emplear la tecnología para posicionar la biblioteca y llevarla allí donde la gente esté, en línea.
Resulta difícil a veces convencer sobre la importancia de atender al usuario en línea como así también la necesidad de invertir en tecnologías.
P: Porqué creaste y desarrollaste tu blog? ( The blog of choice: http://roycekitts.blogspot.com/)
R: Originariamente, por diversión.
Ahora lo utilizo principalmente para discutir lo que estoy haciendo referente a biblioteca 2.0 y todo lo que ésto exige.
Como estudiante, también lo aprovecho como promoción profesional: el blog expresa lo que soy y lo que soy capaz de realizar.
P: Qué tipo de recursos preferís postear?¿Por qué?
R: Principalemte aquellos que me van permitiendo estar actualizado. Pero últimamente, he estado colocando imágenes florales.
P: Qué repercusión ha tenido el blog en tu comunidad?
R: Oh, ninguno. Algunos hasta piensan que los blogs están muy lejos de considerarse tecnología.
P: Cómo animarías al cambio bibliotecario?
R: Escuchen más a la gente joven. Escuchen más a la gente joven que trabaja en su biblioteca, aunque no sean bibliotecarios. Uno nunca sabe quién puede resultar una importante fuente de información sobre un cierto asunto u otro.

1)Royce, how do you feel about your librarian studies?
I am pretty enthusiastic about my education right now. Maybe the first semester I was a little worried about how Theory courses would translate into practical applications, but I am beginning to understand why these classes are so important. My only problem is there are so many courses that I will not have taken by the time I graduate.
2)Do you work at a library?
I do work at a library. I initially started working at the library because they were hiring for a book van coordinator and I lived two blocks away. About a year and a half after that I became the interlibrary loan librarian and really started to get into libraries and the library world. Luckily a supervisor at this time told me to get off my duff and get a degree if I wanted a career in librarianship. Just two months ago I was hired as a reference librarian here at my library. It is a lot of fun having more hands on library work to do. Working on programs, answering questions, and assisting patrons, it is all too much fun.
3)What librarian work do you prefer?
Right now my favorite thing is working with technology and working to get my libraries name out there where people are at online. It is a little tough explaining to people why it is important to have an online presence, but it drives me to work better on buy-in techniques.
2)Why did you created and developed your blog?
I developed my blog originally for fun, but after a couple of months it became boring when I ran out of stuff to say. Now I keep it mainly to discuss what I am doing at work in relation to Library 2.0 and all that entails. As a student, I also use it to let future employers know what I am doing in regards to libraries and librarianship. Shameless self-promotion, but I found out no one else was talking about how cool I am.
3)What kind of resources do you prefer posting? Why?
Mainly links to cool web stuff which helps me remain up to date. But lately, I have been posting lots of flower pictures.
It must be my inner Kenneth Patchen that compels me to do this.
4)What repercussion has had your blog in the community?
Oh, none. Other than “wowing” people who think blogs are some hard to figure out technology.
